I wanted to write up a short post to highlight some of the mork of multi disciplinary artist Nick Brandreth, namely his work on Lippmann Plates. Nick is a friend and colleague of mine that I only know through Instagram, his account is HERE please give it a follow. He teaches at George Eastman House in Rochester NY where he does everything from dry plate, wetplate, he paints, he makes crazy sculpture dioramas and also creates some of the most fantastic Lippmann Plates in the world today.

There are only a handful of people in the world that I am aware of that have successfully made Lippmann Plates, one of them is famed holographer/researcher Hans Bjelkhagen and the other one is Nick. I’m know of maybe one or two others and I’m sure there are more, but Hans & Nick are the two in my immediate circle of friends (or just one degree removed). A paper written by Hans is linked below for PDF download. He is one of the most well known and trusted researchers in the field of holography today.

Lippmann Plates were of course invented by Gabriel Lippmann, they are a full color photographic process which use interference patterns to create full color images. In fact, Gabriel Lippmann won a Nobel Prize for his work on them 1908 because it was so revolutionary at the time. He is an immense figure in both physics, holography, imaging, photographic and stereoscopic visual communication history.

I’ll eventually write a long read article for an upcoming issue of theSHIFT, I have quite a few on the back burner I am trying to complete for the first issue, sometimes in the next month, but I wanted to throw up some links on Nick’s work and process since I’ve been in a Gabriel Lippmann mood lately and Nick is certainly one of the modern day masters of this historic and revolutionary process
I hope you enjoyed this little mini post highlighting Gabriel Lippmann’s historic process and Nick Brandreth’s work.
